In an intriguing photo series, a Russian photographer has documented polar bears claiming deserted structures at a meteorological station on an island positioned between Russia and Alaska.
Dmitry Kokh, the photographer, embarked on a journey across the islands within the Chukchi Sea—an Arctic Ocean marginal sea situated between Russia and Alaska.
Kokh embarked on a personal mission to capture polar bears through his lens. His initial expedition was centered on Wrangel Island, renowned globally as a hotspot for encountering these bears. Nonetheless, potentially owing to an exceptionally frigid summer, the island lacked its customary polar bear inhabitants.
“But nature always sending you something when you least expect it — when we passed through the Kolyuchin Island near the Northern coast of Chukotka, we saw some movements in the windows of the abandoned windows there,” Kokh says. “And when we got close — those were bears!”
“Being the farthest and most Eastern part of Russian Arctic, this place is very hard to get but also difficult to forget,” Kokh writes. “We traveled by the sailing yacht along the coast and covered more than 1,200 miles of untouched landscapes, villages lost in time, spots with various fauna and seas full of life.”
